"Hitler kaputt!"

The Battle of Kolberg, today's Kołobrzeg near Gdańsk on the Baltic Sea coast, was part of the Pomeranian Offensive towards the end of World War II. An important operation for the Soviets on the way to the conquest of Berlin. Adolf Hitler's bunker could be reached as early as February 1945, provided the vanguard of the Red Army was not in danger of being cut off. German resistance was still stubborn.

Supported by the Polish People's Army that marched together with the Soviets in the siege of Kolberg between March 4 and 18, 1945, we see a nice film adaptation of the large-scale attack at sea, by air and the ground offensive. I don't have the number of civilian casualties ready at the moment, but the collective damage must have been considerable. The city was virtually in ruins after the battle. Of course, in the film we see Germans shooting fleeing civilians. Even though a large-scale evacuation had taken place beforehand, the civilian population was still more or less hostage. I don't necessarily want to draw a perhaps controversial comparison with the current war in Gaza, but I will do it anyway. In a war, the civilian population is always the victim and there are always innocent victims. But sometimes this is unavoidable to achieve the higher goal.
