Parthenope plot

"Is she a siren or a myth?"

Parthenope is neither a siren nor a myth. She was born in the year 1950, after which her youth was colored by lightheartedness, which she then lost. She experiences passion and love in an extensive way, no matter how meaningless or impossible they may be. Joy and suffering also appear in her life, as do several father figures, both fictional and real. Some endings mark new beginnings.

Beautiful atmospheric film, but that is actually inevitable with Sorrentino.

As mentioned here, visually it's all very strong, although I don't think it reaches the level of e.g. La Grande Bellezza, or maybe I'm too spoiled .

I have little knowledge of the history of Naples, which might have added some extra dimension and explained some scenes, but without that knowledge, just letting yourself be carried away by the surreal atmospheres and beautiful images (yes, that lady is quite something!) is enough for me.

Parthenope [Celeste Dalla Porta] is born in 1950 and is named after the Greek settlement that later became Naples. Her beauty makes her an object of desire for Sandrino [Dario Aita] and Raimondo [Daniele Rienzo] among others and Parthenope struggles her whole life to reconcile the perception of her appearance with her inner thoughts and feelings. Beautifully filmed and well played by Porta, but Sorrentino's beautiful filmmaking and sometimes Fellini-like parade of vague figures soon start to bore. If you like to be overwhelmed by a visually richly varied film world full of superficialities, you are in the right place here. A bit more content and less forced attempts to surprise or shock the audience would have been welcome.

The title alone hints at the symbolism. Parthenope was a Greek siren who seduced men (mainly through attractive sounds). She fell into the water and after her body washed ashore she was buried in the city that would later become Naples. In the film we see the attractive Parthenope who makes the hearts (and more) of men beat faster, and that in the beautiful summer city of Naples.

Not the first time that Paolo Sorrentino works with symbolism, in combination with beautiful images. The result of this film is indeed a very beautiful film, but in terms of story Sorrentino is somewhat drowned in the amount of symbolism. It sometimes reminded me of e.g. the Italian film Malèna by Giuseppe Tornatore. However beautiful, Celeste Dalla Porta is not Monica Bellucci who put more mysticism and charisma in her character.

If you like Sorrentino's films, this is not bad. But you will be left hungry and feel that the story is rather forced. What remains: the beautiful images and mostly colorful characters. Although it never really becomes memorable. Although for the time being I would like to round my score a bit higher...
