The young genius Paul Stephens (Collet) wants to put together an atomic bomb for a science fair. When he steals the necessary plutonium from a government factory, he gets into trouble.

Nice, but very unbelievable film.
A young man just manages to walk into a secret location and steals plutonium there, which he replaces with shampoo. With that plutonium he manages to assemble an atomic bomb, with which he wants to win a scientific competition. Naturally, the scientists, and eventually the FBI, find out about the theft and go after Paul.
From the moment he arrives at the game, the already implausible story goes all the way. Paul takes the bomb and threatens to detonate it if he is not allowed to reveal that there is a laboratory that enriches plutonium.
Despite the fact that it is really 100% from the thick of the thumb, the story still manages to build some tension. And the climax is well put together.

Somewhere between a family film and a thriller about a gifted student who puts together an atomic bomb and unwittingly turns things upside down. A few pretty tense moments make this a pleasant surprise for me. It is certainly unbelievable, but for a film for young people that is not a mortal sin. An undeserved flop because this one isn't that different from a movie like WarGames. I had to check this one out because Roger Ebert awarded it no less than 4 full stars.
