Based on a true story, but unfortunately not entirely truthful. It has been dramatized to make it an interesting story. On the one hand, I would have preferred to see a film that had stuck to the facts, but on the other hand, it probably wouldn't have been that interesting. Nevertheless, it is a film worth seeing, the cast performs well and I was never bored for a moment. Those two hours flew by. A large enough score.

Good film about a young woman who is the first woman to swim across the English Channel. The film is set in the mid-1920s and the setting is excellent. In addition to swimming, the position of women at the time is central to the film. An entertaining true story (even if the outcome is quite predictable). The scenes at sea look good and Daisy Ridley is convincing in the water.

In 1914, 9-year-old Trudy Ederle [Olive Abercrombie] barely survived the measles. But thanks to her sister Meg [Lilly Aspell], she grows into a lively, stubborn young woman [Daisy Ridley]. That stubbornness, inherited from her mother [Jeanette Hein], serves her well when she expresses her ambition to become a top swimmer. Despite the reservations of her father [Kim Bodnia] and the prejudices about women and top sports, but encouraged by Meg [Tilda Cobham-Hervey] and swimming coach Charlotte 'Eppy' Epstein [Sian Clifford], she manages to qualify for the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris. The performance of the women's swimmers is overshadowed by that of three-time gold medalist Johnny Weissmuller [Robert Eades] and makes Trudy realize that top female athletes are only taken seriously if they show that they are not inferior to men. Inspired by Bill Burgess [Stephen Graham], the second of the five men to cross the Channel, she decided in 1926 to become the first woman to successfully complete this ultimate war of attrition. But because she is a woman, she has to make enormous efforts to secure the financing for this mission, which is deemed impossible. Solid, but unnecessarily romanticized biography of the sports world's first female superstar, tries to play on sentiment a little too hard, but Ridley ensures that the balance never tips the wrong way. And the attention to details, such as the training methods of yesteryear and the media's communication tools, is a nice bonus.
