The Tractate Middoth plot
On his deathbed, Reverend Rant confesses a secret to his cousin Mary Simpson. Twenty years later, student and librarian William Garrett is asked by old John Eldred to find the book "The Tractate Middoth". As a result, the young student becomes involved in a family feud over a will and inheritance, with horrifying consequences.

In the series A ghost story for Christmas in which this director/scriptwriter delivers short television films with a slightly creepy approach. This episode, based on a story by MR James from around 1911, looks beautiful again, in keeping with the long English tradition of "period pieces" with good acting, subtle direction and a tension that is more civilized-creepy than jump-scary. No one will be able to sleep at night because of this, but anyone who is sensitive to this will be left with a nice "frisson". (The title refers to a section of the Jewish Talmud.)
