Shyamalan has clearly inherited her father's talents. This includes both strong and weak points. With the self-written (adapted) script and her own direction, she manages to create a particularly atmospheric and mysterious film in the first half. At times it is also exciting. Although more could have been achieved. Writing the premise to a successful conclusion is more difficult. The final premise with folklore is entertaining, but also not very surprising or exciting. It is brought to a clear and distinct conclusion, but in my opinion it could have been more ambiguous and controversial. In that respect, the film could have gone more for the horror and left you with a few questions.

An entertaining film with potential, but more risks could have been taken. I just don't know if the source material allows that.

Director Ishana Shyamalan presents her feature film debut as a whole that looks ambitious, but is somewhat messy. In particular, the context and depth are often lacking, which means that the first half in particular regularly makes a worn-out impression. A major asset is the leading role of Dakota Fanning, who makes an unmotivated impression. Her character is completely stripped of emotion and/or willfulness, making it difficult for the viewer to actively sympathize with her situation. In addition, Shyamalan can only increase the tension moderately and the finale is too well-paced to compensate for this. Fortunately, there is a pleasant atmosphere, it looks good visually and the camera work is well thought out, and the concept lends itself to enough mystery to prevent boredom from setting in. Somewhat disappointing due to the promising marketing, but you can learn from disappointments. Hopefully daughter Shyamalan's next project will be a real hit and perhaps a bit more groundbreaking for her own qualities. As far as I'm concerned, The Watchers could easily have been made by dad Shyamalan himself.

A film by Ishana Night Shyamalan, although you can clearly see her father's influences. As a producer, he looks behind the scenes. It's not real horror, and it shouldn't be. It is more of a mysterious horror film with some folklore. Still, nicely done with the necessary atmosphere. Dakota Fanning is fun to watch, the rest is not very special. And you can see the plot coming, but it's not really disturbing. Just like her father's films, this is a film that should be enjoyed. Fans of his films will also enjoy The Daughter.
