Nejma [Oulaya Amamra] celebrates her debut as (the first female) bull rider with a large group of friends and colleagues. In order to keep going until the early hours, she takes a “magic drug”. From that moment on, Nejma undergoes a transformation. At first only in her head, later also physically. What is going on and what causes this transformation? Benestan keeps you guessing until the last act. She does create an ominous atmosphere, but the denouement is banal and quite unbelievable.

A film where testosterone is central. If not from the excited bulls, then from the Camargue cowboys who make the bullfighting their passion. The female protagonist Nejma knows all about it and tries to hold her own in this macho world.

Visually quite a nice film with nice long shots of the bullfights, the sultry atmosphere afterwards during the parties, the beautiful decor and the atmosphere as a whole. However, I missed some verve and power in the story. The film also doesn't have to rely on the dialogues.

An incident literally drives Nejma to the bulls. She becomes one with it and you get a werewolf feeling. A bit mysterious and a bit thriller level, but it doesn't really get off the ground. Not entirely convinced at least. It feels a bit unfinished. Too bad.

Visually stunning—and not just because the setting is largely in or around one of the most blessed places on earth, but simply a feast of recognition for me—yes, I’ve been there, and yes, it is exactly as you see in the film, somewhere between harsh, passionate, and arduous, but always with beautiful light and often a blue sky. But the visuals are sometimes just truly utterly brilliant, very, very beautiful—National Geographic beautiful. It is a pity, though, that the story is somewhat weak and doesn't really come across well.

But there is still plenty left, with an abundance of blue sky, the white horses, and the black bulls. Well, cows. That is actually a somewhat difficult point in the story too, how the girl suddenly becomes a fighting bull; with all the fuss about woke these days, something is missing there. Still, Oulaya Amamra plays very well, and whether she runs ahead of the bulls herself or whether there is any trickery involved, she is just tough. Oh, and the soundtrack. I don't think it's the one, but you would almost think you're hearing Manitas herself.
