In the near future, war and corruption have ravaged America and turned it into a theocratic police state. Ordinary citizens have formed a resistance against oppression. One of them, Alegre Dyer, breaks out of political prison and reunites with her husband Ron and daughter Daria. Fleeing from the militias, the family takes shelter in a remote safe house. But their journey is far from over, as the house's dark past begins to gnaw at Ron as his heartfelt desire to keep his family safe is overshadowed by something far more sinister.

The Iranian-American filmmaker Bo Mirosseni delivers an interaction between dystopia and horror, but these do not go together very well. It is mainly the combination between the two genres that does not work so well, because History of Evil alternates them rather than mixing them. The actors and actresses do not play distinctively or intriguingly enough to keep the whole thing continuously interesting, but Mirosseni knows how to find his way with the cinematographic interpretation. Nice decorations, tight lighting and an appropriate soundtrack provide a fairly idiosyncratic atmosphere, but the film nevertheless drags on too long to effectively create tension. Specifically, Paul Wesley's downward spiral is so uninteresting (and drawn out) that as a viewer I wondered why the film focused on this for so long. Points for the original ambitions, but as a horror film it is not very successful and as a dystopian film it is especially not focused enough.
