Departing Seniors plot

"Graduation’s a killer."

Javier, a Mexican-American and gay high school student, is not exactly one of the popular students. But he may be the only one who can save them. After bullying lands Javier in the hospital, he has visions that give him a glimpse of shocking murders at his school just before they happen. Between the social hierarchies and prejudices of clique culture, Javier and his best friend Bianca must try to unmask a serial killer before he strikes again.

The high school setting will be familiar to slasher fans. Most high school slashers revolve around a group of friends attacked by a (preferably masked) killer. Departing Seniors is a bit different. Not with regard to the killer, who is masked. But with regard to the perspective. In this film, the perspective isn't that of a group of jovial teenagers, but of Javier. He's Mexican, gay, intelligent, and an outsider. He's bullied by a group of popular students.

Departing Seniors focuses a bit more on character development than your average slasher. The stereotypes are there, of course, but they're fleshed out a bit more roundly than we're used to. The investment in the characters makes the film teeter on two sides of the pond. On the one hand, there's the coming-of-age section, which emphasizes the relationships between the characters. Pretty good. Likeable characters versus annoying ones, all with sharp dialogue. Entertaining.

On the other hand, there's the slasher section, which doesn't excel in horror-worthy kills or a sinister atmosphere. This part of the film is actually quite tame. No blood, no gore. No exciting threat. The killer is somewhat unimaginatively portrayed, and there's little mystery surrounding him. I quickly had a suspect in mind, and that's exactly what turned out to be the case. No surprise there. I think Departing Seniors would have been a better film if the filmmaker had made a choice and focused on either the interpersonal aspect or the horror aspect.
