Not really a horror, more of a thriller/drama, entirely in black and white. A nice story about a pregnant woman who, after a number of setbacks, ends up at an illegal "adoption agency" where she eventually starts working as a wet nurse to pay off her debt. However, there appears to be something fishy about the "adoption agency"...

A great acting cast, a captivating story and the atmosphere is gloomy, raw with here and there quite a few exciting scenes. Not a bad film at all, a big pass from me.

Not that things were so much better with us 100 years ago or more, but I have seen some from Denmark and there too the social deprivation was great and at least as cruel. We are in the interbellum, the period just after the Great War. The solidarity and respect for the soldiers is over and the "gueules cassées" as they so beautifully put it in French are rejected and earn their bread in a cabinet of curiosities in the circus. It is actually only a small plot line that is not further elaborated, but I found them special.

Karoline is central. Hoping for a better life with a rich guy, but in the end that doesn't come to fruition. Pregnant and penniless, she survives as a wet nurse for abandoned children. This film is no fun, where you tumble from one uncomfortable scene to the next. The black and white images also reinforce the gray, grim atmosphere that hangs over the entire film. Every tiny bit of hope or happiness is quickly crushed. It certainly doesn't make you happy.

A beautiful setting and excellent acting do the rest. Very atmospheric too with situations that feel Daensian with those small paved cobblestone streets along the slums. Rightly nominated for the Oscars, but he will not win.

Under the impression that her husband Peter [Besir Zeciri] has died in World War I, needleworker Karoline [Vic Carmen Sonne] begins an affair with Jørgen [Besir Zeciri]. Then Peter returns with a facial disfigurement and Karoline turns out to be pregnant. She seeks help from Dagmar [Trine Dyrholm], who has helped many women with unwanted pregnancies by temporarily taking in their children and placing them with wealthy Danish families. Karoline and Dagmar become friends and Karoline discovers that Dagmar does not always succeed in keeping her promise. Grim, compelling drama full of uncomfortable moments is excellently acted and the cinematography by Michal Dymek is reminiscent of the work of Carl Theodor Dreyer.
