I have never believed in synchronicity, but now... There is always a book on my bedside table in which I read a few pages in the last few minutes before going to sleep, and currently it is the Oxford World Classics edition Gothic tales[/i ] by Arthur Conan Doyle. And I was just in the middle of [i]Lot no. 249 when I noticed that the film adaptation would premiere on BBC2 on the evening of December 24, 2023... That can't be a coincidence!
This short film follows the story quite closely, including complete pieces of dialogue, with three deviations: Bellingham is not fat and ugly here, but just as slim and handsome as Freddie Fox, it quickly becomes clear how things are going, and while the book version ends rather anticlimactically, the film continues for a few minutes with "Lot no. 250". (Oh, and in Doyle's story, the friend Abercrombie Smith goes to for advice isn't about to move to Baker Street; that addition is a little joke on the part of the director/screenwriter.) But in the end, none of that matters. a lot, because although the acting is nice and the camera work is atmospheric, this is ultimately, just like Doyle's story, a stylish but not particularly scary or catchy story.
