93-year-old Thelma [June Squibb] lost her husband two years ago and has been closely watched by her daughter [Parker Posey] and her son-in-law [Clark Gregg] ever since. Thelma's 24-year-old grandson Daniel [Fred Hechinger] is always ready to help her. When she loses $10,000 in a phone scam, Thelma decides to run her own money. For this purpose she “borrows” the mobility scooter from the also very elderly Ben [Richard Roundtree]. As they try to track down the perpetrator, Thelma's family becomes very concerned. Inspired by a woman who has a cameo during the credits. Margolin tries to make a variation on Mission: Impossible, but beyond some sharply edited shots of Squibb on the mobility scooter and a score that is reminiscent of the Shaft films with which Roundtree became famous in the 70s, he is not coming. Squibb and Roundtree are a nice couple, but the screenplay is disappointingly superficial and oscillates uneasily between comedy and drama.

I can absolutely understand criticisms about predictability. The plot description of also ensures that Thelma can be outlined with ease, but it was almost impossible for me not to feel very strongly about the characters. They, together with the classic-sounding soundtrack, took me on this bizarre adventure that prepares us all for the old age that will inevitably come. This of course does not apply to those who have already reached such an extremely old age or who will not

Ahem.

I give this a big nine and have another one piece written about it.

As a comedy, don't expect much from it. Hardly anything to laugh at unless you find oldie humor funny. This is more of a drama. The actors and actresses still do a nice job, but the whole story didn't interest me much.
