Moving biography about an Italian nun who, at the end of the 19th century, is sent to the slums of New York together with a handful of sisters to help her poverty-stricken compatriots, especially in the areas of education and health care. A film about the determination and intransigence of an assertive religious, for whom “can't” does not appear in her dictionary. A beautiful role by Cristiana Dell'Anna. I like these kinds of dramas about dark pages in American history.

In 1889, Sister Francesca Cabrini [Cristiana Dell'Anna] successfully established a number of schools and orphanages in Lombardy. After many written rejections, Cabrini decides to travel to Rome to speak to Pope Leo XIII [Giancarlo Giannini] personally. The Pope is impressed, but orders Cabrini to continue her mission elsewhere. And so she ends up in New York, where thousands of Italian immigrants arrive every day in the hope of a better life. With the help of a group of faithful, steadfast nuns, Cabrini builds her first school and orphanage in the infamous Five Points neighborhood, despite resistance from local Father Morelli [Giampiero Judica] and Archbishop Corrigan [David Morse], who believe that Cabrini is not has some chance of success. Dell'Anna shines in the title role and ensures that her character (recognized as a saint since 1946) remains firmly on the ground. The sets and decors are just as beautiful as the camera work by Gorkan Gómez Andreu, although Monteverde goes all out with religious symbolism, especially in the last quarter.

A decent film about an Italian nun who comes to New York to improve the lives of immigrants. A beautiful, true story that feels a bit repetitive and could easily have been much shorter. The film is set in the late 19th century and looks excellent.
