The direction and script in particular are not that great and are a bit shoddy.

That said, the cast does a surprisingly good job (O'Connell stands out) and the music is of course still great.

Tears Dry on their Own as the closing track is a particular favorite.

Authorized biography of Amy Winehouse [Marisa Abela], which results in everyone getting away unscathed. Good for them, but it results in an extremely boring film without drama. Abela would not be out of place in a playback show, but she is also saddled with a superficial script. Amy ruins her career through alcohol and drugs, partly due to her relationship with junkie Blake [Jack O'Connell], who also gets off extremely gracefully. Then half-heartedly point the finger at the media and above all do not provide clarity about the circumstances surrounding Amy's untimely death. A cash in, only for her diehard fans and with too many songs and not enough story.

Not the first and not the last biopic, but there is now more criticism. It's also quite quick, usually coming much later after the death or career of a household name. It is certainly justified that Amy Winehouse deserves her own film. And the criticism is not entirely unjustified either. Amy's father and boyfriend Blake fare a little too well in this film. In terms of script, it's not too bad, although it becomes nothing more than a Hollywood story with a rise & fall. Although that is the life of the star of course...

But I am an Amy Winehouse fan, and that helps with a biopic about a musical artist. The film mainly focuses on the lyrics of her songs, which she wrote about her own experiences. And that shows up well. The film is not too bad, we have had lesser biopics lately. And the trump card in the film is Marisa Abela in the leading role, who had the very difficult task of portraying Amy. She does that incredibly well and she also sings the songs in the film herself.

The conclusion is that the film is a bit too standard in terms of story and perhaps comes a bit too early. But Marisa Abela delivers one of the better biopic performances. As a movie, this is quite good and fans will quite enjoy this, if you're not too concerned about Mitch and Blake's roles.
