Italy, shortly after the Second World War. Delia [Paola Cortellesi] makes the best of her marriage to the demanding and sometimes brutal Ivano [Valerio Mastandrea] and also has to take care of Ivano's father [Giorgio Colangeli]. Daughter Marcella [Romana Maggiora Vergano] watches with sorrow how her mother allows herself to be belittled and abused. Filmed as a parody of the neorealism of Italian greats such as Luchino Visconti, Vittorio De Sica and Roberto Rossellini, in which the violent moments are depicted as a sitcom or as a dance. A strange choice, since this has a (slightly too emphatically) feminist slant. I certainly did not see the 'rebellious act' that Delia commits towards the end coming and it was quite an anticlimax. An extremely strange and unsuccessful mix of social drama and social satire.

Enjoyed this thoroughly Italian film dressed in those beautiful black and white tones that very atmospherically depicted the year after the Second World War in Rome.

Quite a heavy theme about domestic violence. Also great is the setting about the position of women, the gossip culture, community life in the neighborhood, the traditions surrounding the engagement...

Despite some melancholy subjects, Cortellesi effortlessly manages to squeeze in some light-hearted elements. Not so much with humor, although there was certainly some satire present, but mainly with the beautiful music that seemed to make time stand still. Different, but successful approach.

Surprising ending where everyone was misled. It seemed like an ode to women for Cortellesi, but then I don't understand the letter to Marcella very well. That looked more like a farewell. That bloated ice cream shop is funny, but Joost may only know how she managed that.

Protagonist Paola Cortellesi makes her debut as a director with an excellent drama about domestic violence, which she deliberately keeps light. The design in the post-war neorealist style gives the film extra cachet. The optimistic “reckoning” with the patriarchy at the end is as surprising as it is welcome. I really enjoyed this.
