The Amsterdam fire brigade is known as racist and sexist, said Mayor Femke Halsema during a meeting at the Dirk Fire Station, part of the Amsterdam Amstelland Fire Department. For years there has been pressure on the fire service to recruit more women and bi-national people, without success. Commander Gerrie Koning has been working for the fire brigade for 33 years and believes it is especially important that there is sufficient staffing. His enthusiasm and work mentality cannot be faulted. After 17 years, Joyce van den Berg is convinced that it is a man's job. You will not get answers in this ethically made documentary by HUMAN, but you will gain insight into the culture within the fire service and the nature of the problems.

Haha, this is a nice insight.

I had no idea beforehand what kind of thing this was, but in fact this documentary is not about the fire brigade at all, but about how an organization in the Netherlands in 2023 deals with the new rules regarding diversity, equality, etc.

A whole load of white men (as it is described in the documentary) as well as women who have difficulty with what is imposed on them from above by managers and politicians who do not have their feet in the mud every day like they do.

From mindfulness ('I finished it but those guys have gone crazy') to a 1/3 women rule ('but men are just stronger too?'). Extremely enlightening.

I used to watch the fire brigade series Resque me, which I always enjoyed watching. Lots of alcohol, drama and the life of a firefighter. Somehow Dennis Leary who plays the leading role in that series reminds me of Gerrie Koning in this documentary.

This documentary gives a nice insight into the life of a firefighter and the documentary does that quite well. That is one side of the story and the other side is that the fire service apparently needs to be more diverse because it is racist or sexist. Firstly, you may wonder whether that is really true because I certainly don't expect political correctness from a firefighter. And even if that were the case, it wouldn't matter if they ran into a building that was on fire to save the people.

Femke Halsema appears briefly and that does her no good. She also leaves quickly but makes very crazy arguments. She says the job of a mayor and firefighter is the same. But that is not the case at all. Even the firefighters contradict her on this. In general, women do not want to work with women but prefer to work with men. Because less drama and hassle. People would also rather be rescued by a group of firefighters than firewomen. This also applies to the police. It is also as if Femke says that men and women are equally strong, but that is of course not the case. She quickly leaves again and gets into the car that is pulled up in front of the barracks.

The overall whole feels to me that the pleasure is slowly disappearing and you can read that from Gerrie's face.
