It's a shame that Richard Curtis, the writer of crowd favorites Four Weddings And A Funeral, Notting Hill and Love Actually, has stooped to the level of this paean to capitalism and selfishness, even if he tries to mask it with a thin story about a father [Paapa Essiedu] missing out on his daughter's [Jordyn McIntosh] eighth birthday. He acquired a relic through the auction house where he works and it turns out that Flora [Melissa McCarthy], a Scottish Djinn, has been in it for 2000 years. She can grant Bernard's wishes until he tires of her. In a sad example of surreptitious advertising, Bernard and Flora go on a shopping spree. Bernard wishes that all children get the Christmas present they want and immediately arranges a huge puppet show for his daughter. Definitely not the ideal family film to watch during Christmas and a low point for Curtis and McCarthy.

A somewhat early Christmas movie (end of September on Netflix), with the cliché story of a genie in a bottle and someone who has messed things up and has to get it right with the help of his djinn. A movie for a weekday for lack of anything better…

I especially didn't like Melissa McCarthy's over-the-top acting in an attempt to be funny.

I don't know this comedienne, but I'm sure she'd do better on stage than as an actress... In the film it's far too forced.

Also some attempts to bring sentiment into the film didn't touch me. Too superficial.

And I didn't really feel the Christmas spirit either, but that will be partly due to the timing of watching it.

That's why I'm not really impressed by this movie. I hesitated to stop watching it.

2*
