Double bill with The Great Escaper - which on paper has an advantage because it stars Michael Caine. But while he plays his role almost perfectly in his usual manner, it still grates - at no point does he convince as a seasoned Irish veteran, and certainly not in that scene where his own flat accent falls out for a moment. Then this film does very well with Brosnan in the leading role, because he fits like a sore finger. And then along the way he also encounters a saving angel in the form of Clémence Poésy. Two nil up, and ready for the deciding round.

But then something comes out of the way through the other film. Because while that film follows the story of the 'real' Bernard Jordan, and also has him play under his own name, this film stars a completely fictional Artie Crawford, and builds completely invented puns around it. Too bad.

How great it could have been if the story of The Great Escaper had been played by the cast of The Last Rifleman. That would have been an instant classic.

There are indeed great similarities with The Great Escaper (Film, 2023). This one is a little less so, not because of Pierce Brosnan or Michael Caine, but because of the lack of a character like Glenda Jackson, the star of that other film. I missed some humor or wit in this film, that typical British thing.

Furthermore, a very entertaining film. Not very spectacular, slightly sweet, not very surprising. No idea if Brosnan was the best choice as an actor. Although he certainly didn't do badly.

I like such road movies with those letter encounters about ordinary life where putting things into perspective and enjoying little things are central.
