Zielona Granica plot
After moving to Podlasie, psychologist Julia involuntarily becomes a witness and participant in dramatic events on the Polish-Belarusian border. Aware of the risks and legal consequences, she joins a group of activists who help refugees camping in the forests in the area under a state of emergency. At the same time, a Syrian family fleeing the civil war and their Afghan teacher, unaware that they are victims of political fraud by the Belarusian authorities, try to reach the borders of the European Union. In Poland, fate brings them together with Julia and the young border guard Jan.

An important film about the dire lack of humanity with which refugees are received at the border between Poland and Belarus ( read this wiki carefully before watching the film). We see refugees who (lured to Belarus by Lukashenko under false pretenses) end up between two stools at a border where neither country is prepared to receive them, which some have to pay for with their lives. The film also exposes a shocking double standard in the final scenes when millions of Ukrainian refugees are suddenly granted mass and hassle-free entry in 2022. A very politically charged film, but one that manages to stick through its universal theme and excellent cinematography (in black and white, only the first seconds of the film are in colour). Unfortunately, the film sometimes goes off the rails, especially when it over-eagerly portrays the border guards as a gang of heartless scoundrels. The considerable playing time did not bother me for a moment.

Thank you Agnieszka Holland for making this film. The film was banned in Poland because it was said to be Nazi propaganda (according to the far-right government there). It is shocking to see how the Belarusians and Poles are literally playing with people's lives by pushing them back and forth across the border.
There is only 1 solution and that is to revolt, so what are we waiting for?

Bashir [Jalal Altawil] and Amina [Dalia Naous], from Syria, fly to Belarus with their family and Bashir's father [Al Rashi Mohamad], because President Lukashenko has announced that they can easily reach the EU from there. Together with the Afghan Leila [Behi Djanati Atai], their journey to the border begins full of optimism, but they soon become a plaything in a battle between the Belarusian and Polish border guards. Jan [Tomasz Wlosok] is the Polish border guard (and expectant father) who has concerns about the treatment of refugees, Marta [Monika Frajczyk] leads a group of young Polish activists who do what they can to protect the rights of refugees and Julia [Maja Ostaszewska] is an unsuspecting psychologist living in the border region who, by a twist of fate, is drawn into this affair. Holland leaves no stone unturned to increase our sympathy for the refugees, but by portraying the border guards as caricatures it is ultimately unconvincing. Camera work and acting are of a high level, but the epilogue makes a more impression than the more than two hours that preceded it.
