A film adaptation of the Broadway musical, which in turn is based on the 2004 film. It wasn't entirely clear to me whether this would be a remake, reboot or sequel, but in fact just a remake with musical numbers, like the recent Waitress: The Musical. If you go purely for the story there is nothing new to find, you can just watch the '04 version, if you like musicals at all and Mean Girls was (or still is) one of your favorite high school films this might be one nice mixture for you. The songs were a bit hit-and-miss, so they scored exactly 2.5*.

Cady Heron [Angourie Rice] is a spineless teenager who is immediately lectured at her new school by the so-called 'Plastics', a group of appearance-obsessed girls whose school is ruled by Regina [Renée Rapp]. The 'art kids' Janis [Auli'i Cravalho] and Damian [Jaquel Spivey], who are of course both gay, don't think that's a good idea. This of course ends badly. With the help of social media, Cady shows that everyone (read: all girls) is equally mean. Tina Fey wrote this so-called update of the 2004 film of the same name, but the central message about live and let live is lost due to a pigeonholing that is dated and offensive. A gloomy musical comedy that only comes to life during the musical intermezzos, which are dynamically filmed and provided with energetic choreography. Cravalho in particular makes an impression, even though the songs add absolutely nothing in terms of content. Gloomy and often poorly acted, although Fey has good moments as the math teacher. The attentive viewer will recognize Lindsay Lohan in a small role towards the end.

Twenty years after the release of the original film, comedian/writer Tina Fey has released a musical remake, which, apart from the songs, adds little to the original. Not nearly as fun as the smooth Lindsay Lohan vehicle from 2004 and therefore unnecessary.
