Crypto Boy plot

In Amsterdam East, the young delivery man and tout Amir dreams of a better future, but he gets no further than cycling orders for Burrito, his father Omar's struggling Mexican restaurant. Gentrification is in full swing in the neighborhood - convenience stores are making way for trendy coffee bars, sushi joints and fitness studios - but to Amir's frustration, his stubborn father seems deaf to his ideas to modernize the old Burrito. Omar, in turn, sees his son as an irresponsible good-for-nothing who is far from being able to take over from him. When a large real estate company buys the block of houses and doubles the rent, father and son increasingly find themselves at odds with each other and are in danger of permanently losing the restaurant and their home.

I have no idea whether everyone will quickly realize that there is something wrong with those investments. I am somewhat in this field myself and after 5 minutes I already thought: this looks like Ponzi fraud, but I have no idea how others experienced it. The fact that everyone falls for it and just puts money in such an account is also completely credible, I have seen it all too often how gullible (and greedy?) people can be.

Anyway, otherwise incorporated into a sympathetic but also somewhat weak film. The conflict between father and son is full of grotesque gestures and clichés and I don't find the protagonist very convincing either. These local residents are nice additions, but are also not very original. The film is also just a little too long. Visually and in terms of atmosphere it is okay at times. 2.5*.

Shady El-Hamus is one of the new hopes in Dutch cinema. El Libi was a fresh adolescent adrenaline trip through Amsterdam, although I would have preferred a different ending. With Forever Rich he played the trick with Top Notch-like madness. He is far from finished with his criticism of ego trippers from Amsterdam's yuppie side.

Amir is a bored young man who often reluctantly has to help his father Omar to keep the old familiar Buritto business running. Especially in the period just before corona, in which in Amsterdam East, where they are located, all authentic Asian shops, local shops, cafes and eateries are being replaced in bunches by luxurious, trendy places where the consumer price is a lot higher. Not that people have chosen this themselves, no, Ymere is once again in the way by raising the rent prices; with a renovation as an excuse.

While father Omar is at a loss, Amir seems to be living between two stools. One day when he delivers a burrito to a conference venue, he hears interesting pleas from an audience. There's a certain Roy on stage, who tells us what's going on. Working hard for your money yields nothing. Money has to work for you.

The film also shows a beautiful clash between the older generation and the new generation. While father Omar still thinks doom-mongering, gets stuck in nostalgia and remains stubborn, Amir seems to succeed in getting Roy to go into business.

The money seems to be pouring in and the building appears to be saved in the nick of time. So it is indeed correct. The money works for you and a world opens up for Amir. But don't expect a happy ending; unless there is a price in return.

Nice fresh film. That the Netherlands may have made the first crypto thriller. Will El-Hamus not be suitable for an A24 production?
