This is very nice.

Reminiscent of films like Ink and City of Lost Children, some dark (urban) fantasy that relies on atmosphere. In the base there is also a thick dash of Alice in Wonderland, with some styling that is occasionally reminiscent of Tsukamoto. Just to give you some references.

The underlying theme is relatively basic, it is more about the adventure, the characters that Emma encounters, and the situations in which she finds herself. And Harris really knows how to make something special out of it. Audiovisual enjoyment, without relying on an exaggerated budget.

It remains difficult for me to pick up these types of projects, which is quite a shame, because even though these films are not very popular nowadays, there should still be an audience for them. People who enjoy a bit of creative fantasy should certainly not ignore this one, hopefully it won't be Harris' last film.

4.5* and a extensive review

Fantasy drama that will not leave you indifferent. You have to let yourself go into the story otherwise it doesn't work. A child, Emma, falls into a coma and the entire film tells how she floats between life and death. For example, she walks around with a radio in a kind of no man's land, in fact her subconscious picking up her mother's words in her ear. And so you can actually connect everything you see with reality. Her psyche contains impressions, memories, images, fears... very resourcefully done with scarce resources and it certainly makes sense in the sense that you are not left with questions.

Moon Garden can undoubtedly be called a triumph of vision and imagination; the film moves away from cheap melodrama and prefers to make something dreamy with rich colors because it was mainly about the pure way in which a child sees life. Sometimes very moving and quite unforgettable. I also have to agree with my predecessors with a high mark.

Creative horror fairy tale that actually asks too much of the very young leading actress. Haven Lee Harris does a convincing job, but director Ryan Stevens Harris simply asks far too much of her. Fortunately, this is partly covered up with a convincing visual design. With a small budget, beautiful things are built that are provided with enough detail and originality to stand out. On the other hand, Moon Garden fails to take the viewer along in the emotional journey that Harris goes through, which makes the middle section in particular somewhat dry to watch. After a while, boredom even starts to strike, but fortunately there is a convincing finale with enough room for interpretation. Some fellow users make a diverse number of connections to other films, this film reminded me most of the fairly recent The Blazing World, which I secretly think is slightly better.
