What Happens Later plot

"They missed their connection."

Decades ago, Willa and Bill were together. They run into each other again when they are at the airport. However, they are also stuck there because of a heavy snow storm. The limited space and time they are given to talk to each other gives them the chance to catch up. Willa and Bill both begin to wonder if their love deserves a second chance rather than parting as strangers by the time their flights can depart.

Talking film about a man who gets stuck at the airport due to weather conditions and meets his old flame there. Not all that interesting, the conversations are mainly about their past relationship and what their lives are like now. The cast doesn't perform badly, but the film quickly gets boring. Not much remains of Meg Ryan's beauty. Is it because of her age or the plastic surgery? Probably both.

The screenplay by Steven Dietz, Kirk Lynn and Meg Ryan is not that bad and even has some Capraesque moments, but due to a lack of chemistry between the protagonists and Ryan's inept direction, this misses the mark time and time again (sometimes just). Former spouses Willa [Meg Ryan] and Bill [David Duchovny] bump into each other at an airport that continues to postpone all flights due to a snowstorm. The announcer's messages seem to aim to condemn the two to each other and that gives them the opportunity to talk about the present and their shared past.

A very low score on Moviemeter is a bit exaggerated, but this is certainly mediocre. Both actors are a bit too old for a romantic comedy (to put it politely), there is a lack of chemistry between them, and the dialogue doesn't sparkle anywhere. It is the type of film they could make better in Europe; in my opinion, it is copied from, or inspired by, Décalage Horaire (with Jean Reno and Juliette Binoche). For the older generation (which also seems to be the target audience of What Happens Later), it might be somewhat acceptable to sit through (although), but director Ryan clearly has nostalgia for the bygone days of When Harry Met Sally; however, this meeting between Bill and Will is about five classes lower.
