This film is clearly a parody of all those cheap, shoddy horror films of the 80s, but despite Peter Dinklage, Elijah Wood, and Kevin Bacon (who was already taken to task in the Marvel series), this one was much worse. The story and the Toxic Avenger's actions were seriously subpar. I was hoping for some laughs, but not even that. Some scenes were so dull that I just skipped through. It could have been much better. The "actually between the lines" names of some locations were too predictable and not funny at all.

First of all, I'm not a fan of Troma, and certainly not of the rickety, rickety original from 1984. This remake (which sat on the shelf for two years) is a bit more appealing, but still leaves a lot to be desired. The decent cast doesn't do much, and many elements, including the humor, only work sparingly. Director Macon Blair (also appearing in a small role) is enthusiastic, but he misses opportunities, and the timing of many crucial moments is poor. The film looks alternately impressive and utterly awful, which contributes to the ambiguous feel.

An entertaining horror film, but nothing more. Blair plays the pulp story in a delightfully wacky way. The buildup is decent, and the journey towards the protagonist is the strongest. Once there, the action goes off the rails with some rather cheap-looking gore, which you start to tire of towards the end. The pace remains pleasantly high, and the horror is interspersed with plenty of humor, though not always successful. The acting is solid. Visually, as mentioned, it's a bit cheap at times, but that suits the film. 2.5/3.0
