Winterbottom is once again making history.

This time, he's certainly not making things easy for himself by choosing a somewhat obscure detail from the formation of the state of Israel, back when it was still called the Palestine Mandate and administered by the UK on behalf of the UN. A rather difficult period, and moreover, almost anything you try to say about it will be considered questionable by at least one of the parties (and there are certainly more than two).

Perhaps with the exception of this particular story, though—because while the relationship between Shoshana and Tom Wilkin is reasonably well documented, it also presents a kind of miniature version of the conflict, thus largely taking the wind out of the critics' sails. Unfortunately, the downside of this is that the film doesn't really aim to be particularly exciting or captivating.

What is truly excellent is the film's visuals. Not only is the cinematography exquisite, with an abundance of pre-World War II architecture and a clever avoidance of every conceivable cliché in the setting, but also the excellent acting, particularly highlighted by Starshenbaum in her lead role and Harry Melling's occasionally somewhat grim performance. On the other hand, I found Booth a bit too light for his role, and perhaps his character could have been given more space.
