To End All War: Oppenheimer & the Atomic Bomb plot

In the deepest secrecy, the United States under the leadership of Robert Oppenheimer worked in World War II on a weapon that could defeat the Germans. It was the atomic bomb. An all-destructive weapon that, to the horror of the inventor himself, would actually be used in Japan.

Not made in its entirety and airing ahead of the premiere of Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer (who also features), this look back at the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the leader of the team responsible for creating the nuclear bomb that has played a decisive role in world history since 1945. Many knowledgeable people speak up and emphasize again and again how terrifying the atomic bomb was. Archival recordings of Oppenheimer confirm time and time again that he realized afterwards what the impact of this invention would be and how much it affected him personally. Unfortunately, it remains quite superficial, although the period in which Oppenheimer's reputation was tarnished is interesting.

Going to see Nolan's movie tomorrow. This documentary ran on Canvas this week and I wanted to catch it beforehand. Also surprising and nice that Nolan himself also appears in this documentary. Subsequently gives me the best idea for the film, of which I expect a reasonably accurate picture of the development of the atomic bomb, except for the romance. Of course it's still a movie.

With the film, the quiz fact about who developed the atomic bomb disappears. Now half the planet knows. And yet Oppenheimer was otherwise unknown to me. Interesting documentary in which the person Oppenheimer was always in two minds after the development (and dropping) of the bomb(s). The impact was greater than what was initially thought. Interesting and intriguing was also the constant tension with the American government services (CIA, FBI) about his past. Politics is a dirty strategic weapon with dual agendas. As a scientist you are no longer a toy, a cog in the whole.

A good documentary about the monsters responsible for the development of the A-bomb, and later also the H-bomb (Edward Teller). Most shocking to me is that Oppenheimer along with Truman, the US President refused to deter Japan by dropping an A-bomb on a sparsely populated area, instead opting to destroy two populous cities to create the greatest possible deterrence. . As we now know, the A-tom did not bring about the end of all wars, but plunged the world into a new era in which the great powers are able to destroy the entire world.
