If you like subtle films and character development, it is better to skip this one, as it is so black and white.

This film almost feels like propaganda, every nuance is missing.

Superior social drama painfully exposes the cause of tensions in an impoverished Paris suburb. After the sudden death of the mayor, the relatively inexperienced Pierre Forges [Alexis Manenti] is appointed by the city council as acting mayor. His wife [Aurélia Petit] warns him about the changes this will bring, but that does not stop Pierre from seizing the opportunity to seriously tackle the major problems in the neighborhood. He confronts the (predominantly black) population who live in poorly maintained apartment complexes owned by the municipality. They acknowledge the problems in their neighborhood, but state that the municipality has ignored their calls for financial and material help over the years. As in Les Misérables, Ly keeps himself aloof and avoids caricatures. Forges has good intentions, but due to his lack of experience he does not understand the consequences of his choices. Other perspectives are those of community worker Haby [Anta Diaw], her brother Blaz [Aristote Luyindula], who has had bad experiences with the police, deputy mayor Roger Roche [Steve Tientcheu], a man from the neighborhood who is torn between idealism and pragmatism and the Syrian refugee Tania [Judy Al Rashi], who is still hopeful. The highlight is the evacuation of an apartment complex, a tour de force reminiscent of the sinking of the Titanic.

It's all a bit too thick to really convince. Alexis Manenti also has an annoying head and generates 0 sympathy. A kind of reverse Adam Sandler who manages to arouse sympathy even as a villain. That's partly his character but it's still worse, I'm really bothered by Manenti's stupid behavior that feels too manufactured. It's fine that he makes stupid decisions, but if someone's head bothers me, things quickly go completely wrong for me. Then the young Diaw is a lot more convincing.

In terms of atmosphere it's okay and the themes are fine. But the whole film feels too contrived unfortunately. Les Misérables also suffered from this, but it remained just on the good side, all in all, this Bâtiment 5 (which is apparently called Les Indésirables in the Netherlands, seems a bit unnecessary to me) does not. 2.5*
