Seen at the Leiden International Film Festival

We see how 24-year-old Elvis meets 14-year-old Priscilla at an air base in Germany in 1959, the beginning of their relationship. That age difference and the dominance of the irascible Elvis makes it uncomfortable to watch this film. They are all beautiful pictures that you see, in pastel colors and soft lighting. But there is no tension in the story, it all flows quietly, while you keep thinking "get away from that guy". It also doesn't help that there isn't a single Elvis song to listen to (rights were not available), although the soundtrack does fit nicely with that era.

Weak, watched this film at an AMC in Florida due to the bad weather. I could have spent my time a little better. I also don't understand why someone with Sofia Coppola's qualities wanted to direct this film. A film in which Priscilla undoubtedly watched every part of the process.

Last year we had Baz Luhrmann's Elvis, of course. I can't help but feel that Priscilla felt her screen time was quite limited there so there was apparently momentum to make this.

Elvis is portrayed grimly here. Not bad, but not great either by Jacob Elordi. His authoritarian character within the relationship and his drug use are strongly emphasized. It must also be stated about five times that Elvis and Priscilla kept their relationship modest until she came of age. The romance in between honestly escapes me too, a 24 year old guy with a 14 year old girl. There is little romantic about that for me. Even when Priscilla is supposed to be in her 20s later in the film, you still see a 14-year-old girl. To be honest, Spaeny doesn't really convince me in that role.

In addition, a film that is actually about Elvis, without Elvis music. What a letdown.

Biopic about Elvis' wife, based on her autobiography. The acting performances of (especially) Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elorzi are better than the story, which after a promising, versatile beginning (the courtship period) gradually becomes rather one-sided. I have missed the music of “The King” so much.
