The Gates plot
"Death is just the beginning."
London, 1892. William Colcott is sentenced to the electric chair. On the day of his death, he curses the prison in which he finds himself and everyone who enters its gates. Two autopsy photographers turned paranormal investigators, Frederick Ladbroke and Emma Wickes, become embroiled in an investigation involving a mysterious medium, Lucian Abberton. They must work together to stop William's ghost from escaping prison and unleashing the gates of hell on Victorian London.

Although director Stephen Hall certainly employs an atmospheric enough approach at times, a film like The Gates is clearly too long and has little to offer. It is nice that these kinds of small productions have managed to secure a reliable name like Richard Brake, but he features only a few minutes in this drawn-out production. Nevertheless, the first hour is reasonably engaging. The location is so well chosen and the acting is decent. However, in the second half, the filmmakers lean too heavily towards the supernatural, and I am not talking about dark shadows, creaking floors, or slamming doors. The Gates mainly goes too far over the top in a rather unmemorable way. Points for the solid atmosphere; otherwise, as a fan, you are missing little here.
