Twelve-year-old Mildred's life is turned upside down when her mother is hospitalized. Soon after, her estranged, down-and-out father Strawn Wise appears, who is a magician. Hoping to bond with the teen, Strawn takes his daughter on an ill-advised camping trip in New Zealand's rugged wilderness. He wants to search for the mythological beast known as the Canterbury Panther.

The film started slowly. It was even a bit dull at first. Little happened, and the conversations were just empty talk. The 4:3 aspect ratio also lasted a bit too long, so that at some point you start thinking, "When are we going back to 16:9?" The children also started to get annoyed.
Otherwise, a reasonably entertaining, standard children's film, enjoyable for a bit, but nothing more. A know-it-all daughter, who initially got on my nerves, and a long-haired Frodo who does his thing. Halfway through the film, the irritation gives way to respect, and the woman starts to convince in her performance. A small bright spot, thankfully.
For the rest, the film relies on the beautiful New Zealand scenery, not the CGI. The CGI wasn't great...
