Tanja Nijmeijer was barely 20 when she decided to leave her native village of Denekamp to teach English in Colombia. There she worked on her Spanish by watching a lot of television. The news was dominated by the battle between government militias and Mono Jojoy's rebel army. After studying the ideologies that gave rise to this conflict, she decided to join Farc. She gained worldwide fame through the publication of her diary, which she left behind when the Colombian army tracked down her camp, and through an appearance as a translator during a globally broadcast interrogation of three hostage Americans. Her life story is certainly fascinating, but this documentary is technically a mess. The sound editing is downright poor at times, with incomplete sentences or sentences that are clearly spliced together; Tanja speaks Dutch on one occasion, English on the other in two separate interviews, the chronology of which is unclear; the archive images are often used haphazardly, with little or insufficient explanation. Ideal material for a feature film, because this story deserves to be told (much) better.

Good documentary about Tanja Nijmeijer, the young Dutch woman who became a member of the Marxist guerrilla or terrorist movement FARC in Colombia, in which Tanja largely tells her story herself. She was idealistic but also naive: when she fled her village in the Netherlands to teach English in Colombia, she became politically committed and wanted to do something about the oppression of the farmers in Colombia, which was only possible because of the war that was raging there. to participate in the armed struggle themselves. The struggle and corruption within the FARC became a disillusionment, although she personally became a celebrity who, as such, conducted the peace talks on behalf of FARC, after which someone from the guerrilla movement was elected president. Tanja joined FARC out of political conviction and not because of the adventure, but her story is exciting because a Dutch girl in a guerrilla movement in the jungle is an adventure for the viewer.
