When a nanny or housekeeper becomes a real nursemaid, you create a kind of surrogate mom and the obligatory and assigned tasks often become very emotional. A bond is created with the child who - depending on the situation - you raise with your own values and standards. Those educational tasks that are very broad also provide a comforting shoulder when necessary or a source of support when the child asks for it. The role as employee fades and the parental role increases. Not always healthy I guess...

Ama Gloria responds to this somewhat. The bond between Cleo and Gloria is close, heart-warming too. Little Cleo is playing great and it's heartbreaking that her footing will leave her. The film isn't drowning in sentiment, but I wasn't really blown away either.

Although I do understand the purpose of those animations - from the perspective of a child's environment - I found them unnecessary for the film and even disturbing. Certainly a solid film that you should not ignore as a drama or arthouse fan.

6-year-old Cleo is one to immediately take to your heart, and what an unparalleled performance this little girl puts in, incredible. I wasn't completely blown away in terms of emotions, but it is certainly a beautiful, moving film.

Six-year-old Cléo [Louise Mauroy-Panzani] has been lovingly cared for by Cape Verdean Gloria [Ilça Moreno Zego] since her mother's death, because Cléo's father [Arnaud Rebotini] has to work during the day. When Gloria returns to her home country to realize her plans for her own hotel, no one takes the time to prepare Cléo for this. To make the situation even more traumatic, she spends a holiday with Gloria and her family. The scenes in Paris, in which the bond between Cléo and Gloria becomes clear, are beautiful and reminiscent of the masterful What Maisie Knew. As soon as the story moves to Cape Verde it slowly declines, first because you see the problems coming miles in advance (parents should know better), then because Cléo turns out to be a bit too wise for her age and finally because of unadulterated - and unbelievable - melodrama .
