To accelerate the assimilation of Aboriginal people, the British Commonwealth introduced a scheme in 1937 that allowed Aboriginal children to be forcibly admitted to Christian boarding schools. In this magical realist drama, a boy [Aswan Reid], who does not speak or understand a word of English, arrives in 1939 at a mission where nuns Eileen [Cate Blanchett] and “Mother” [Deborah Mailman] with the help of the gruff George [Wayne Blair] trains young Aboriginal people to be pious, decent Christians. Thornton largely avoids the conflict and portrays Eileen and Mum as patient, caring and friendly people. The turning point is the arrival of an image of Jesus Christ on the cross, an appearance that moves New Boy (as he is consistently called) in a way that Eileen has great difficulty with. A somewhat slow, but intriguing, dazzling drama full of religious (and sometimes controversial) symbolism, with a telling, unforgettable denouement. An impressive acting debut for Reid, who holds his own well next to the (once again) excellent Blanchett.
