Rapito plot

The young Jew Edgardo Mortara lives in Bologna in the year 1858. He is taken from his family and secretly baptized to be raised as a Christian. His parents do not give up and their fight to get their son back reverberates through the political ranks. This puts the papacy in direct opposition to democracy and Italian unification.

Over the centuries, many crimes have been committed in the name of the Catholic Church. This docudrama-like film by Marco Bellocchio tells the story of the kidnapping (plus aftermath) of a Jewish boy at a time when the Papal State led by Pope Pius IX is on the verge of collapse due to Garibaldi et al. It is an intriguing drama that unfortunately fizzles out.

Bologna, 1851. At the age of six, Edgardo [Enea Sala] is removed from the Jewish family of Salomono Mortara [Fausto Russo Alesi] by order of Pope Pius IX [Paolo Pierobon] and placed in a Catholic boarding school. When Edgardo was six months old, he was reportedly baptized without his parents' knowledge or approval by Anna Morisi [Aurora Camatti], who believed she was saving Edgardo's life. Naturally, the Mortaras try to get their child back, but will he still feel at home with his Jewish parents after all the indoctrination from the Catholic Church? Potentially interesting religious family drama about the influence and meaning of religion on and for your identity that is disturbed by the attention for the increasing social resistance against the Pope and the Papal State of which Bologna was then part.

Almost old-fashioned film adaptation of the kidnapping of a Jewish boy by the gang of thieves around the Pope. The endearing main character is actually too young to play an unforgettable role, which is why the story mainly focuses on those left behind, especially the mother. The scandalous story comes out well and is told in a classic way. I really loved the scene in which Jesus is taken down from the cross... It could indeed have been a bit shorter, but we have seen that more often in recent years.
