Gem.

A mix of Pixar, Ghibli and especially Yuasa. It is clear that they have also looked at the Western animation, especially the basic style seems inspired by Pixar, although the characters are slightly more realistic in terms of proportions. The fantasy world is closer to Ghibli, less well-trodden paths, but designed in a slightly more original and lively way.

But it is mainly the maximalist style that makes this film so special. Everything is alive and moving, colors pop out of the screen and there is regularly room for some more artistic filters and camera work. There is no lack of ambition, because the plot also swirls from a typical adventure for young people to a more in-depth drama in the second part.

The soundtrack is a flaw (including and especially, but not exclusively due to some musical intermezzos), the nice world and the beautiful visual design ensure that it never really irritates. Kind of strange that this film seems to be passing here in the West, because technically this is also of a very high level, plus you get some artistic bravado with it. More of this.

4.5* and a detailed review

San Su [Tingwen Wang] misses her mother [Jing Ji], especially now that the attention of her father [Kuixin Teng] and stepmother [Yang Ting] seems to be mainly focused on San Su's brother [Yi Dong]. During a holiday cruise, San Su falls overboard and somehow ends up in Nan He [Su Xin's] Deep Sea restaurant. Nan He must protect his restaurant (literally and figuratively) from 'The Red Phantom'. Overambitious, extremely tiring animated film uses just about every color on the color spectrum (preferably in the same frame) and loses itself in an overabundance of superfluous visual details. The standard plot about a girl who learns to let go of the past does not work at all due to all that visual violence and Nan He is one of the most annoying characters in animated film history. Xiaopeng Tian apparently was more interested in flowing hairstyles, mustaches and animal fur. May he be happy with it.
