Seen in the cinema and for the time being it was another one-off visit for the coming years to the Bijlmer ArenA because once again I found a room there with talkative people and laughing teenagers who made a cinema visit to this film, which is not of high quality in itself, even more disappointing. .

That text number 3669 is completely useless, but that's beside the point.

I completely agree with the few reviews you can find about this film.

The acting is quite reasonable, the atmosphere is ok with a few (scare) moments and the recorders sound good on the big screen, but the effect has become quite predictable with a very cliché ending and few things are well explained.

For a horror, the film also contains very few really scary or gory scenes.

In all, a tame horror that starts quite well but ends in nothing because the script is not developed properly at all.

No idea how Icelandic director Erlingur Thoroddsen came up with the substantive concept of The Piper, but he cannot be blamed for a lack of originality. At least, if we speak exclusively about the concept, because the interpretation surrounding it is anything but original. The film looks visually neat, but Thoroddsen has no control over the substantive development of the story. The second half throws everything together, but mainly results in a confusing design of the threat and far too large-scale scenes that defy all logic. Charlotte Hope does what she can in there, but she is powerless once the extremely ridiculous final phase (the final confrontation with the Pied Piper of Hamelin) opens. When it comes to the horror itself, The Piper has a number of exciting pieces, but they seem more coincidental than deliberate. Excessive, out-of-place music and clumsy cutting often destroy the tension building, but the visuals look colorful and the sets are well thought out. Because of all the silliness, a film like this is difficult to see as horrifying, but in the end it is still somewhat entertaining.

Nice atmospheric and horror film that increasingly loses track in the second half and ends downright badly.

In terms of tension/horror, The Piper never exceeds the Paul van Loon horror level, but visually a good atmosphere is created and the story concept is very nice. Julian Sands acts terribly as the conductor, much too forced a character, but the rest of the cast isn't too bad. Even the kids aren't annoying. The music occasionally does. Not so much the flute/orchestra music, but the bombastic blowing that should create tension but is far too loud/present for the atmosphere of this film.

Slowly but surely we are working towards a climax. The performance in the concert hall, a long scene with quite a penetrating play of light, is nicely done. Then this film destroys itself when the pied piper shows up in the form of an idiotic monster and a crazy final battle ensues. This last fifteen minutes is so bad that it destroys some of the atmosphere and creepiness that had previously been built up. do.

It's a shame that makers of these types of films so often think that you have to end with a chaotic final battle on Power Rangers level. The power of suggestion, of not showing things, can be so much stronger.

All in all not boring, but this is not a high flyer.
