For as long as man can remember, the vast Ukrainian forests have held countless secrets and mysteries. Wonderful creatures live among ancient trees, faithfully guarding their sacred realm. One of them is the young girl Mavka. She has been elected Protector of the Forest and her main task is to protect the Forest and its Heart - the Source of Life - against their enemy: man.

Ukrainian propaganda work with a pseudo-ecological message paints a romantic picture of Ukraine, with vast landscapes, a 'Dark Forest', a treacherous enemy and the granddaughter of an old miller who (literally) comes to claim her constitutional rights. The parallels with the recent history of Ukraine are abundant and those who like outdated costumes and folkloric tunes will find the Ukrainian equivalent of Jordanian folk music and the Klompendance here. Mavka [Laurie Hymes] is the friendly girl who, to her surprise, is chosen to succeed the current protector of the jungle [Mike Pollock]. Lucas [Eddy Lee] is the love interest who is looking for medicine for his uncle Leo. The evil one is Kylina [Sarah Natochenny], who has come to claim the land that belonged to her grandfather. Noteworthy is the love song 'Two Hearts But One History', a sentiment that both Russia and China can agree with and that sounds like an entry for the Eurovision Song Contest that ended in the rear. There is some fun to be had in guessing which character represents Putin, Stalin or Zelensky and I even think I spot an alter ego of Yevgeny Prigozhin.
