L'Île Rouge plot

In the 1970s in Madagascar, the French colonial empire is gradually coming to an end. A few soldiers still live with their families in the French army bases. The boy Thomas mirrors the heroine Fantômette from the story series of the same name and observes his surroundings with a curious look. His carefree existence also makes way for another reality.

This is a very neat film visually, but the script is quite... unkempt. First, for a completely plotless hour and a half, the focus is on a French expat community in Madagascar, with the key question quickly popping into my head: "Where on earth is this film going?". Only in the last 10 minutes does it suddenly become about how the locals want the French to leave but the effect is meagre. There is also an inexplicable amount of time (I estimate about 20 minutes) spent on the adventures of a cartoon character from a book a child is reading in the first scene. The link with the rest of the film is an absolute mystery to me. I think the director just had a nice idea that he tried to incorporate into this film in a rather frenetic way.

It is a typical plotless arthouse film without tension, a slice of life without punch. It wasn't terribly annoying, but I do feel cheated when the titles suddenly run across the screen and I hardly have the feeling that I have experienced anything.
