Konbiniensu Sutori plot

Kato is an ambitious, but not very successful screenwriter. Day in and day out, he pitches his stories to obscure impresarios and managers, who are not exactly impressed. Not that he is out of ideas, but it all leads to nothing. Unlike his relationship with his girlfriend Zigzag - which leads to the abyss. No one - least of all Kato - sees it coming that his life is about to take some very strange turns.

Cool new Miki.

Not a typical comedy, although it remains light-hearted. It's more of a movie in the direction of Lynch, or those late-00 mystery/horror movies that I sometimes miss (think Reeker or Stay). It's something different for Miki, the great thing is that it still remains a recognizable film.

Visually very beautiful, a suitable soundtrack (although something more could have been done with it), a strong cast and a story that you can work with yourself. It helps to have some background in Japanese folklore, but it is not really necessary.

It is based on a short story by Mark Schilling, the well-known (and almost only) professional critic who deals with Japanese cinema. Hopefully that will give the film some extra visibility, but like most Miki's that will remain fairly limited.

4.0* and a extensive review
