The 1970 World Cup kicks off on May 13, 1970 in Mexico and Martin [Everarde Rodriguez] won't even let his mother [Luz María Aguilar] stop him. He travels independently (presumably from Guatemala) to the Azteca Stadium in Mexico in the hopes of catching a glimpse of his heroes Pélé, Gordon Banks, Tostao, Luigi Riva and Franz Beckenbauer during the World Cup. Once we arrive, we're given brief, dated recaps of most of the games and catch a random glimpse of Martin every now and then to remind us that the movie is all about him. Gross fouls, exceptional aggressive behavior towards the referees and the conclusion that the goalkeeper of Brazil can't whistle, but also memorable moments. How Beckenbauer got it into his head to play out the semi-final is a mystery to me. Times change. A curiosity, but really only for football fans with a special interest in World Cup history.
