Knowing that Tona [Mateo Garcia] is seriously ill and weakened, his family prepares for a surprise party in honor of what will likely be his last birthday. Family members bicker and chat about everything (but nothing interesting) while Tona's seven-year-old daughter Sol [Naíma Sentíes] tries to understand what exactly is going on and especially why the family is keeping her away from her father. Sol asks a few hard-to-answer questions out loud, but otherwise nothing interesting or surprising happens. Avilés is yet another that ends with a shot stolen from Truffaut's Les Quatre Cents Coups to suggest that something interesting has happened. Presumably the girl learned an important life lesson? At least I missed that.

Not much special happens, but the film still manages to fascinate, almost like a nice ASMR experience because you see from the perspective of the child, who follows his own interests, the hustle and bustle of the preparation for the family celebration and then the party. itself as a stimulus in the background. Ultimately, the painful reality of the adult world – her father is dying – does sink in, so that in that sense it is a coming-of-age story in which the child takes an important step towards that other world or actually begins to leave the child's world; It is precisely the intermingling of the childish and adult world that makes the film somewhat surreal and interesting.

Small film about an everyday Mexican family preparing a birthday party, often seen through the eyes of a little girl who is unaware that the party has a double meaning. Only after a long time did I understand the family relationships - as it should be: not giving everything on a silver platter. And only after a long time does Sol, the girl, realize what is going on: goodbye instead of a party.

I enjoyed it while watching. But afterwards the film quickly disappeared from my mind and heart.
