The English dub was sometimes of questionable quality, but that didn't spoil the fun.

What is especially strong in this giallo is the tension. There are regular POV shots of the murderer. This plus the creepy soundtrack, consisting of piano and violin music, supplemented with some keyboard/synths, provides a very good tension. The addition of (an imitation of) heart palpitations is also successful.

There is not really much killing, but when it happens, the scene is nicely drawn out. In these scenes we often get to see a drawn out murder. This is exactly why the scenes seem more realistic and harder.

However, there are also a few weaker points. For example, the acting of a number of cast members is quite bad. In addition, you can see the twist coming from miles away.

Overall, Lamberto Bava has made a solid giallo with this film. Not groundbreaking, but overall it is quite entertaining.

The beautiful poster made me want to see this film. Director Lamberto Bava was first an assistant to his father Mario Bava and later to Dario Argento. He had already surprised me positively with Demoni. The assistant director of this film, Michele Soavi, also worked as an assistant to Argento and played as an actor in films by Argento and Fulci. Soavi also plays the murderer here. In short, many connections with other Italian masters.

The acting in A Blade in the Dark is pretty bad and the dub is - even by Italian standards - worthless. It seems like the English voice actors are having a competition about how fast and monotonous they can say something. Also, the text is pretty stupid. But that's obviously not what you watch a movie like this for.

The setting was so Italian that it had something. The shots were quite neat, I personally found the night shots quite atmospheric. Also quite good first-person shots. A box cutter as a murder weapon, original haha. The murder scenes were of varying quality. The fake blood looked good but there was no real gore. Stabbed once in your throat and then you're dead, not very realistic haha. The later kills were a bit better.

I liked the music itself, typical Italian synthesizer sounds. But in the end it gets very repetitive.

You don't have to do it for the story, that's not so special and ultimately predictable. I also always find it stupid when a movie is also made into a movie.

Reasonably entertaining Italian horror, but no masterpiece. I liked Bava's Demoni even better.

Reasonably entertaining Italian horror that mainly relies on the atmosphere, soundtrack and good first-person shots. Those scenes with a Stanley knife as a murder weapon are cleverly depicted. The story is rather vague at first, but gradually becomes clearer as the film progresses. The whodunnit can be figured out after a while, although the information surrounding the perpetrator is far-fetched. One of the best scenes in the film is the murder in the bathroom. Really well done. 6.5/10
