Maestro plot
Legendary Broadway composer Leonard Bernstein, best known for his work in West Side Story, meets Felicia at a party in the year 1946. Their love journey is followed over 30 years and his professional life is also examined. Their marriage resulted in the children Jamie, Alexander and Nina.

The convincing make-up of Vivian Baker, the technically excellent camera work of Matthew Libatique and not to mention the music of the real maestro are unfortunately the only positive elements of this vanity project by Bradley Cooper. He does a nice imitation of Bernstein, including his somewhat crazy conducting style (give me Bernard Haitink) and Mulligan may scream for an Oscar nomination in a few emotional scenes, but the screenplay (by Cooper and Josh Singer) is a mess . Leonard Bernstein [Bradley Cooper] is a passionate bi-sexual musician who marries actress Felicia Montealegre [Carey Mulligan] and has a tolerated, but secret affair for a long time with the much younger Tommy Cothran [Gideon Glick]. That's all we learn in this pretentious, superficial and garrulous biography of one of the most successful musicians of the 20th century.

Reasonable film about the life and work of composer Leonard Bernstein. Despite a number of beautiful scenes, it is still a somewhat boring biopic (and that is mainly due to the way it is told). The film looks good with nice camera work and editing. Excellent acting from Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan.

It is remarkable and disappointing that a biopic about Leonard Bernstein pays relatively little attention to his music (West Side Story) and focuses much more on the bisexual life of the famous composer/conductor and the tensions and (mis)understanding that entails. brings. I will remember Carey Mulligan's beautiful role for a while, but I fear I will quickly forget the rest of the film.
