Asab Keshi plot

Kindergarten is the first and last opportunity for boys and girls to learn together without hindrance before they end up in Iran's strictly segregated education system. The six-year-old student Roham is the often silent witness of the events around him. As his curiosity grows, the complicated real lives of the other students begin to unravel. As Roham gets to know the class bully and quiet Rana better, he uncovers some disturbing secrets that disrupt his innocent world.

According to Iranian law, boys and girls are taught separately from primary school onwards. And there are calls for this segregation to be applied to preschool. This film tells the story of toddlers Roham and Rana who want to get married and wonder how they can have children. The tough kid (and bully) reveals to Roham how it works. Incidents at school and meetings with parents reveal the backgrounds of these children in a drama that touches on heavy themes. Working with children is always difficult, as is evident from the different acting styles of the kids in question, which often lack spontaneity and (therefore) authenticity. Yet there is much to enjoy.

Iranian films are often quality films, but this one disappointed me. The film follows a few toddlers in kindergarten: we are told that only in kindergarten boys and girls do not receive separate education and the film gives the impression that the religious indoctrination (or education), which is already introduced, is still little. gets a grip on preschoolers who are more concerned with worldly matters such as the question of how children are made. The film seems to be about the (last) phase of childish innocence in Iran, but the main character and two other toddlers who are followed turn out to be victims of emotional neglect or sexual abuse, so that their innocence has already been lost. I don't really know what the film wants to say with this - the school responds very involved and well to the abuse of the children, so there does not seem to be any social criticism (or it is a criticism of Iranian parents) - as the idea of the film is poorly developed in any case: the story is a bit difficult to follow and the acting of the children in particular leaves much to be desired.
