In the 1960s, journalist Loretta McLaughlin learns of a notorious serial killer who is rampaging Boston. McLaughlin is the first to link the murders to the so-called Boston Strangler. Together with her colleague Jean Cole, they must challenge sexism to report on the killer. In their fierce battle, they want to keep the female gender informed no matter what.

Nice film about a journalist who reports on a murderer who strangles women. Based on a true story, this produces an entertaining film with the right tone and fairly dark look. However, a rather standard structure and the film never really impresses.

The story of 'The Boston Strangler', who was responsible for a series of murders of single women in the 1960s, had already been told in 1968 from the perspective of the investigating detectives with Tony Curtis in one of the best roles of his career as assassin Albert DeSalvo. Ruskin focuses here on Loretta McLaughlin [Keira Knightley], a journalist at Record American who has been sentenced to write about "women's issues" because of her gender, including a review of Toaster. However, she is the first to conclude that a number of recent murders were most likely committed by the same person. After considerable insistence with her editor-in-chief [Chris Cooper], she is given the opportunity to investigate together with the experienced and thorough Jean Cole [Carrie Coon]. Intended, among other things, as a tribute to female journalists, the revelations of McLaughlin and Cole caused panic and numerous false confessions that hampered the police investigation. Little attention is paid to this here. Ruskin, moreover, to espouse a questionable theory about a series of murders that has never been satisfactorily solved. Solidly made and well acted, but less exciting and penetrating than The Boston Strangler.

Didn't get the best reviews but I thought this was a very nice movie with a fantastic acting duo, Coon and Knightley. I especially like to see Coon busy, maybe not very well known but I think a very good actress. It may have been a slow film, but I enjoyed watching it, perhaps because the subject fascinates me so much. Besides, DeSalvo had the same lawyer as OJ Simpson, not important of course. The journalist McLaughlin had another fantastic career and died not so long ago. A film can be made about her life, just check it out on Wikipedia....
