As far as I remember the short film, both productions have little or nothing in common. This feature film is completely self-contained. The previously released short is not an abbreviated version of this.

Admittedly, we follow the little Hamoudi who adores Messi. Football is his great passion, but his football dream is beaten to those when he loses his leg. Football certainly does not dominate the film. The film also offers other themes in which the situation of the father is also central. The tensions between Shiite and Sunni Muslims are also discussed (without being explanatory).

The scene in the beginning, in which a (female) passer-by is violently unveiled during an operation, symbolically said a lot about how and why the Americans were hated. It also explains how people like Hamoudi's father were viewed when they helped the Americans. Baghdad Messi is a tender yet raw film, but it doesn't really make you happy.

Feature film version of Kalifa's 2012 award-winning short film of the same name about 10-year-old Hamoud [Ahmed Mohammed Abdullah], who lost his left leg in an attack in Baghdad. What keeps him going is the love of football (and of Messi in particular), so when the ramshackle television breaks down in the week of the Champions League final, which sees Barcelona (with Messi) and Manchester United (with Ronaldo) against each other, he must collect money to watch the match with his friends. Interesting story has a really unnerving scene but suffers from the kids' weak play.

The idea of the film is fascinating, also some themes that are discussed and the atmosphere and images of Iraq are all fine. But the individual scenes themselves often don't really manage to keep the attention. The child actors are not very great, but every scene gets bogged down in a somewhat slow affair and so the film is a succession of such scenes that together make something of it, but also make the hour and a half last quite long, also because the film never surprises and fairly safely coloring within the lines. 2.5*.
