In September 1973, tensions between Israel and the surrounding countries increased again. President Golda Meir [Helen Mirren] faces difficult decisions when her military staff warns her that Egypt and Libya may invade the country during Yom Kippur, the most important day of the year for the Jewish community. Filmed largely as a flashback, based on Meir's testimony during the interrogation of an investigative committee in 1974. Mirren is extraordinary as the 'Iron Lady of Israel', but the screenplay is superficial and gives her little guidance to really provide her character with emotional depth . What sticks out most is probably that President Meir was a chain smoker. You'll just have to make do with that. Ends with archive footage featuring the real Golda Meir and you wonder why a film about such an interesting person (with such a strong protagonist) can produce such a mediocre film.

Golda Meir's role is portrayed very beautifully. Actually too good for this film. The mediocre acting of the remaining cast and the thin dialogue stand out somewhat.

The film is limited purely to the military strategic side of the Yom Kippur War and Golda's physical discomfort. Interesting in itself, but somewhat one-sided. Especially because we follow everything from the meeting rooms. Some emotion is added through sound fragments of the fights, but it all remains somewhat static.

The dialogues between Golda and her army leaders and foreign guests seem unrealistic. There is hardly any jargon used, it is clear that this film has been made in such a way that it is easy to follow for everyone. Pleasant in itself, but seems a bit superficial.

Nevertheless, quite nice and educational to see how this war went at the time and how Israel's first female prime minister played a key role in it.

Nice film about the Israeli Prime Minister who is told that an attack is being initiated. A historical film about a war that is still going on. There are no images of war here and I thought that worked well. Unfortunately, the main character was less well developed. And that wasn't Helen Mirren's fault, because she never disappoints. Just under 3.5 stars.
