Good film in which a British preacher arrives in New Zealand in a small British settlement. The film is set about 200 years ago and gives a nice insight into the culture of the Maori at that time. A nice setting and of course also enough beautiful images of the New Zealand landscape. Although a fine role by Guy Pearce, the main character is a bit boring during the first half.

It is 1830 when a British ship is forced to dock on an island for repairs due to a storm in the Tasman Sea. There, preacher Thomas Munro witnesses a bloody battle between the Maori tribes of Akaterewa [Lawrence Makoare] and Maianui [Antonio Te Maioha] and manages to save the life of Rangimai [Tioreore Ngatai-Melbourne]. He learns the culture of the native population and tries to persuade the two chiefs to unite, so that they can defend themselves in the future against their common enemy: British traders. Nuanced, fascinating reconstruction of the start of the exploitation of Maori by European traders was made in close collaboration with Maori and finally gives Guy Pearce a role that does justice to his acting qualities.

The Convert is a beautifully developed film of the Moari war. The setting and story make it very entertaining. Beautiful film.
