Bobi Wine: The People's President plot
In Uganda, democracy only exists on paper. Current president Yoweri Museveni has been in power since 1984 and has no intention of resigning. From the Kamwokya slum, however, a counter-movement is emerging, personified by ghetto pop star Bobi Wine (real name Robert Kyagulanyi). Directors Christopher Sharp and Moses Bwayo follow Wine and his wife Barbie for years, recording his ascent. It begins in 2014 with protest numbers against the regime and culminates in a bid for the presidency in 2021.

On January 26, 1986, Yoweri Museveni proclaimed himself president of Uganda after deposing Milton Obote in a military coup, partly because he allegedly tampered with the elections. 35 years later, Museveni is using any means necessary to retain power. Because he is too old under the constitution to serve another term, he has it changed. But he finds a formidable opponent in Bobi Wine, a musician who is becoming a new folk hero with his catchy music and simple but effective lyrics. Moses Bwayo and Christopher Sharp followed Wine during his campaign and this documentary shows how Museveni intimidates the people and uses every dirty trick, first to prevent Wine from running for office, then to literally get him out of the way. Anyone who thinks that Alexei Navalny was the only person who risked his life to end the dictatorship is in for a rude awakening. The use of amateur footage – usually provided anonymously for security reasons – increases the authenticity of this shocking wake-up call.
