Black Mambas plot

Patiently constructed, contemplative portrait of three members of the Black Mambas. These ambitious South African women protect the 'Big Five' of the Kruger Park from poaching. A dream job, it seems, meant to empower women. But to what extent are they primarily a marketing tool for the organization – led by white, mainly male compatriots? The founder of the Black Mambas praises the economic boost of tourism, but his employees know from experience that the communities around the park do not benefit. When filming at their home, it turns out that the men in their family cannot find work; the pressure on the shoulders of the women is enormous.

'Black Mambas' consists entirely of black women (but is led by white men) and has been on standby since 2013. This documentary follows the training of a new class and focuses on the backgrounds of three women. The Black Mambas suffer from their own success: the number of poaching cases has been decimated, with the result that the women never have to take action. The monotony of the work makes it less attractive and inevitably the question arises whether the costs still outweigh the benefits. As a portrait of protectors of
